At this point you’re just getting to know each other. Your newest customer is curious to learn more about your business and you have their attention (80% of them). I’d like to suggest you imagine yourself meeting a new neighbor at their house for the first time.
What would you say? What would you do? Would you walk in empty handed, open the fridge, grab a beer and make yourself a sandwich? Not likely…I hope not anyway.
More likely you would offer a house warming gift as a starter. But is that value? What they really need is information about the neighborhood, the trash pickup, a list of baby sitters, where do the locals eat, where are the best dog walking parks?
The right thing to do is bring some intangible value. Offer information about the neighborhood, the trash pickup, the schools, let them know where the best dog walking parks are located, and you could bring a house warming gift too. Then, after you get through the handshakes and the how do you do’s, I can almost guarantee you will chit chat about each others likes and dislikes. Do you golf? How old are your kids? Where’d you go to school? Ect. Etc. Etc.
Welcome emails are not that much different. Always consider how you can bring value. Include additional information about your business, a savings offer, or maybe even a survey that allows you to get to know each other. Good relationships take time to grow and should be good for both parties.
